Been to Alaska twice. The best way, in my opinion, is by car. Inland you get to see the interior of the mountain ranges and places like Beluga point and Glacier Bay. Also, if your feeling adventurous take a small plane trip out to some of the out lying coastal and inland towns not accessible by roads.

If you are going to Anchorage you must drive the 120 miles out to Seward. A small fishing community northeast of Anchorage. The drive is beautiful and there, last I remember, is a delicious Italian restaurant there. Speaking of food look for a place in Anchorage called the Sourdough Mining Company (great ribs). Even better if you want to see something neat go to Earthquake Park in Anchorage. A lot of good history there and I also had a moose come up to me and try to eat my camera.

I would recommend flying to Anchorage and getting a rental car. The drive up through Washington and Canada is a bit grueling and the road can be a little treacherous at times especially in the winter months. There are some great seafood restaurants right on the bay that serve fresh seafood right off the fishing boats.

Enjoy your trip. You will never see a more beautiful place.
References :
My mom actually went on a cruise to alaska a few years ago, she really enjoyed it because the cruise ship stops at little towns in alaska and you can go on tours and go on buses and walk around and stuff........she said it was beautiful and she also saw glaciers breaking off the ice shelfs......i would suggest either a train or cruise.........car is too far to drive, and in a plane, you are very high up and you might not have a good view
References :
What's the best way to see Alaska: a cruise, a train, a car, or a plane?
Some reasons why you made your choice would be great. Also, some places/sites I shouldn't miss would be helpful. Thanks to all who answer.
