How do I make a game like Final Fantasy?
Hello, I’m trying to make a game like Final Fantasy with the free version of Game Maker 7. I finally figured out how to make sprites out of "sprite sheets" that I can download, but how do I make the sprite sheets myself? And actually make them look good? Is there some kind of grid that lets you fill boxes in with color to make a sprite sheet that can later be combined into a sprite? Also, can someone give me links to how to make and draw sprite sheets? I want to learn how to make characters for my game. Also, what about background? Like what if I want to put a mountain in the "room" how do I do that? Also, I’ve run into a problem. I have it set up so when I hit right on my keyboard, the character moves right. Well, the sprite is a moogle running to the right. When I hit left and he moves left, the image is still going to the right. Also, he looks like he’s running right all the time, even when I have him standing still. The two last things I want to know how to do.
    1. How do I make menus, such as a shop system and a weapon equip screen? And how do I make my health bar appear, and how do I make it so that when I hit other characters my health goes down?
    2. How do I make characters (say my moogle and a black mage sprite) have a conversation??? And have different conversation options?
One last question actually. How do I make it so I’m in a town, and there are a few houses, and I go to one of the doors, and then I’m in the house (the next "room" I guess) all of a sudden? Back to my question about those kinds of objects, how would I even get the houses and such there? Thanks alot, I hope you can answer all of my questions. I would like nothing more than taking a few years to make my game and publishing it online to install and play for free, as a tribute to Final Fantasy; put alot of references to FF in there. :) P
Also, someone told me I’d need to know Visual Basic. Where can I get tutorials or documents on how to learn and use Visual Basic for making games? (Like the OLDER Final Fantasies, of course, like IV, V, and VI.) And is there a way I can use C++ to make it, because I’m taking a class in high school about using C++ next year? Thanks for all the help.

NEVER going to happen, by asking how to make final fantasy in a game creation suite, you will most likely never make a game like it, one man can not reproduce it anyway.

Sorry to bring the dream out of the air, but no BASIC, C or other can save you now.

I programmed a game very similar to the first FF game in c++. I used code::blocks as my ide and allegro library for graphics. It’s very difficult and time consuming to make a game like this. You should start with with a simpler game, like pong or a platformer, before attempting to make an rpg. Once you get into the habit of programming smaller games in c++, the other questions you have about menus, ect, will all become more apparent. I would recommened against using a suite like Game Maker or RPG maker to make a game, because they are very limited. An actual language such as c++, while may take a little longer to learn, will give you much more freedom than you’ll ever have working in a game design suite. Good luck with your project.
