Chicago (Sept. 9, 2009) Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and the city council honored Saint Xavier University and its president, Judith A. Dwyer, Ph.D., with a resolution commending the Universitys efforts toward environmental sustainability during a ceremony today at Chicago City Hall.

The resolution congratulates the University for its serious and significant commitment to the principle that higher education must be at the forefront of sustainable, green building practices, and outlines several of Saint Xaviers sustainability accomplishments, including:
•Saint Xavier being the first University in Illinois to have two Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certified buildings, and one of only 11 universities in the country to accomplish this feat.
•The GreenBike Share program, which allows University community members to borrow bikes from docking stations across the Chicago campus.
•Saint Xavier being the first higher education institution in Chicago to sign the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, a pledge by more than 650 colleges and universities across the nation to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions and become climate neutral.

On behalf of the Saint Xavier Community, I wish to thank Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and the City Council for this honor, said Dwyer. We are proud to see Saint Xaviers sustainability efforts recognized by the City of Chicago under the leadership of Mayor Daley, who is clearly one of our nations foremost leaders in sustainability initiatives.

This was created as part of our individual music video projects for The Film School in Newtown, Wellington. The aim of the exercise was to discover, plan, shoot and manipulate ways in which music can be put with visual media to produce something that explores and idea, or tells a short story.

I have always been intruiged by the nightlife of Wellington City, and my appreciation for it has grown mostly within the last year, after basing my NCEA L3 Photography portfolio on a static/still version of this music video. It has definitely been a very, very fun project to delve into, as many nights have been spent shooting and editing. I’ve learnt so much about the Canon XH-A1, and like I say in the video log at the end, I am amazed at its low-light capabilities. Likewise, I have learnt a lot more about the Adobe After Effects editing system for compositing. AE is something that I would like to get to use more often. John Choe & Community Leaders Launch Grassroots Campaign for City Council

Candidate Will Provide Continuity & Effective Leadership in Safety,
Quality of Life, and Protecting Our Legacy

Flushing, NY Surrounded by enthusiastic supporters at the Macedonia
A.M.E. Church, John Choe launched his campaign for the New York City
Council on Memorial Day. Mr. Choe honored those who have served our
country as he himself stepped up to serve his community. Reverend
Nicholas Tweed and other community leaders spoke of the importance for
strong and effective leadership in the 20th District, a diverse
community that encompasses the neighborhoods of Flushing, Queensboro
Hill, Mitchell-Linden, Kissena Park, Harding Heights, Auburndale, and
Whitestone. Mr. Choe is seeking the seat currently represented by
Councilman John C. Liu, who is a candidate for City Comptroller.

John has a clear vision and a proven track record of service. He
possesses all the qualities of a fine City Council Member, said Rev.
Tweed. John has been active on every major issue affecting this
community. We strongly support the candidacy of John Choe for City
Council.

In addition to Rev. Tweed, other community leaders also spoke in
support of John Choe included: Chuck Apelian, Vice-Chair of Queens
Community Board 7; Dr. Aurelia Rodriguez, Co-Chair of the Queens
County Puerto Rican Political Action Committee; Arlene Fleishman,
Co-President of the Mitchell-Linden Civic ociation; John Byas,
President of the University Park Tenants Council; Dilip Chouhan from
the Hindu Temple Society of America; Craig Kinsey, President of the
Bland Houses Tenants ociation; and, Donald Henton, Democratic Party
Committeeman.

Most candidates will say what they plan to do, but John talks about what he is already doing, stated Henton. John will bring people together in the same way President Barack Obama did in his campaign.

This is a critical time for our community. As we continue to grow by
leaps and bounds, we need to ensure that affordable housing, good
schools, and our fair share of City services continue to be a
priority, said Mr. Choe. Our community has played an important role
as a center of religious freedom and cultural diversity. These are
the American values that our men and women in uniform are fighting to
protect and what I hope to uphold as the next City Council Member.

Mr. Choe has an extensive career in public service, currently serving
in the New York City Council as Chief of Staff to Councilman Liu, and
previously with the Corporation for Supportive Housing, the Citys
Department of Finance, the Coro New York Leadership Center, and the
Citys Rent Guidelines Board. Moreover, Mr. Choe is a recognized
community leader who is currently Co-President of the Mitchell-Linden
Civic ociation, which represents over 3,000 households in Flushing,
and a Board Member of the Democratic Organization of Flushing. He is
also a member of the NAACP Northeast Queens Branch, the Queens
Historical Society, the Flushing Council on Culture & the Arts, the
Flushing YMCA, and attends the Flushing Meeting of the Religious
Society of Friends. Mr. Choe earned his Bachelor of Arts (BA) in
History from Binghamton University as a New York State Regents Scholar
and his Masters in Public Policy (MPP) at the University of Chicago as
a Woodrow Wilson National Fellow in Public Affairs & International
Relations. In addition to fellowships at Columbia University and the
Open Society Institute, Mr. Choe has been recognized for his public
service by New York Newsday and received the prestigious the Union
Square Award from the Fund for the City of New York.

1950s deactivated Elmhurst Illinois Atomic fallout/blast bunker.

Information for this video was compiled from a number of anecdotal accounts. So far there is only one secondary source which is the book, “Elmhurst Parks And Recreation 1920-1990″. This Elmhurst Park District Publication states, in Apendix C on pp 81; “abandoned reservoir used as Civil Defense headquarters which serves as a small sledding hill”. The book is at the Elmhurst Public Library ( H 352.73 JOH Non-Circulating ).

In the 1950s Elmhurst had a Civil Defense orginazation which was formed around city government. In April of 1953 the City Council passed a CD ordinance based upon the State model. The Council payed for city employees to travel to CD seminars and at one point the council even had a geiger counter demonstrated in/near the old city building (Glos Mansion).

Other area CD preperations included a 100 man emergency hospital located in the basement of York High School (the old basement track). The Chicago metropolitan area even had Nike Surface to Air (SAM) missiles located in over a dozen sites around the region. One of the radar/launch sites was in Addison (RT 53 & Army Trail RD).

We are trying to get as much information on this as possible. The site is indeed an old concrete water tank but close examination reveals that the entrance was rebuilt for a purpose other than storing water. In fact this modification would prevent water storage. It is possible that it was meant to be converted into a storage unit but one must wonder why the entrance was rebuilt with so much concrete?

In terms of a blast shelter it “might” protect you in the event of a Hiroshima size device being dropped on the Loop. However if a thermonuclear bomb/missile (Hydrogen H-Bomb) detonated anywhere within ten miles it is very doubtful that this reconditioned water tank would be much protection. Additionally the resulting firestorm would suck all the air out the shelter smothering anyone inside (who might have lived through the blast). In terms of a “Fallout Shelter” this place would have good protection, from the Gamma Wave radiation, with something like 12″ concrete all around and dirt banked up against the walls.
