The Gardens have recently been fully restored at a cost of approximately £6.69 million and they are the only Botanical Gardens in the country to have undertaken such a complete restoration. In order to access the generous Heritage Lottery Fund Award of £5.06 million, an additional 25% in matched funding was raised. The Gardens are the only public open space in the country where the voluntary sector has raised more than £1 million in matched funding. The Gardens’ staff and FOBS volunteers continue to develop the plantings throughout the Gardens. In the future, additional projects will be undertaken to further enhance the Gardens as a centre of horticultural excellence.

Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, England. It is so named because of its origins in a field on the River Sheaf that runs through the city.

In 1801, at the time of the first census Sheffield had a population of over 31,000. By the standards of the time it was a large town. By 1851 it had grown to over 135,000. Like all Victorian towns Sheffield was dirty and unsanitary. However even for the time Sheffield had a reputation as a grimy and dirty town (not surprising considering its heavy industries). In 1832 there was an outbreak of cholera which killed 402 people.

However not all the houses were slums. In the early 19th century a middle class suburb was built west of the town around Glossop Road.

In the working class areas the worst houses were back-to-backs. These houses were literally joined back to back without even an alley between them. In 1864 the authorities forbade the building of many more such houses. However those that had already been built remained.

There were, nevertheless some improvements during the 19th century. In 1818 an Act of Parliament formed a body of men called the Improvement Commissioners with powers to pave and clean the streets. They also formed a police force. From 1818 the street of Sheffield were lit by gas.

The Botanical Gardens were laid out in 1833. The first cemetery opened in 1836. In 1830 a corn exchange where grain could be bought and sold was opened (it was later rebuilt).

In 1832 a dispensary opened where the poor could obtain free medicines. The present Cutlers Hall was built in 1832. In 1836 the botanical gardens opened. At first they were privately owned but the council purchased them in 1898.

In 1843 Sheffield was given a charter (a document giving the townspeople certain rights). From then on Sheffield had an elected town council, which gradually took over the powers of the old Improvement Commissioners. Sheffield was made a city in 1893. The Town Hall was built in 1897.

Ruskin Gallery was founded in 1875. Mappin Art Gallery opened in 1887.

In the early 19th century a private company provided piped water. In 1859 they built a dam across Dale Dike. On March 11 1864 this dam burst. As a result 240 people drowned. The council took over the water supply in 1887. In the 1870s the council built sewers and drains. At first raw sewage was pumped into rivers but in 1886 a sewage treatment plant was built.

The first public library was built in 1856. From 1873 horse drawn trams ran in the streets. In 1899 the first electric trams ran in the streets of Sheffield. Mappin Art Gallery was built in 1887.

During the 19th century the old industries like iron continued to boom. In 1856 Thomas Bessemer invented a way of producing better quality steel. In 1858 he began producing steel in Sheffield. Button making flourished. However in 1840 a way was found to make silver plate by electroplating replacing the old Sheffield plate. Cutlery continued to be the dominant industry in Sheffield.

By 1900 the population of Sheffield was over 400,000. This was partly due to boundary changes. In 1921 the boundaries were extended to include Handsworth and Wadsley. In 1935 they were altered to include Totley, Dore, Beauchief and Greenhill.

The city has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wide economic base. Sheffield obtained world-wide recognition during the 19th century for its production of steel. Many innovations in the industry were developed locally, including crucible and stainless steel. This fuelled an almost tenfold increase in the population during the Industrial Revolution. It gained its city charter in 1893 and became officially titled the City of Sheffield. International competition caused a decline in local industry during the 1970s and 1980s, and at the same time the nearby national coal industry collapsed, affecting Sheffield’s population.

Firebug is on Millstone Lane between the Council Offices and the old Town Hall. The Aqualounge on Wellington Street, more or less opposite the Council Offices is a bar, club and restaurant on 3 floors in one building, with Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights being the club nights. Moving away from the area around the Council offices, in Braunstone Gate, there’s the Loaf which styles itself as a pub to ‘loaf around in’, slow-down, have a drink and let the world go by. If you want a traditional city centre pub, then head for the Globe on Silver Street. Built in 1720 it serves fine draught ales, decent food and has a warm and charming atmosphere.

Restaurants:

There is in Leicester what is known as the ‘Golden Mile’ of Asian food, to which people are drawn from miles around for a truly authentic Asian eating experience. The Golden Mile is centred along the Belgrave Road, leading north out of the city from the Haymarket bus station. Some people would say the nearer to the bus station a place is, the better the restaurant will be. Friends is an award winning Tandoori restaurant with main courses ranging from only £5 to £12. Nearby is Sanjay’s Curry Pot which specialises in the Indian/Portuguese cuisine of the Goa region in India. It is one of the oldest established Asian restaurants in Leicester; prices for a main course are typically between £5 and £13. Moving away from the Belgrave Road and into the city centre, there is the Opera House, which is by the Cathedral in Guildhall Lane. This is well known for its imaginative menus and the sumptuous building in which it is housed. Alongside the market in Hotel Street is The Case, another stylish and contemporary restaurant, which also has a champagne bar in which you can order snacks and light meals. Although technically a bar and restaurant, Mobius, on Braunstone Gate, serves an excellent mix of Mediterranean and Thai cuisine. It’s a relaxing place to eat and produces authentic flavours for the regional food it produces by using only the best produce.

Entertainment:

The De Montfort Hall is probably the best known venue Leicester has, almost a ‘trade-mark’ venue for the city. Built in 1913 and recently refurbished, it can accommodate an audience of 1500 seated or up to 2200 standing. As well as the indoor hall there is an outdoor amphitheatre that can house up to 5000. It has played host to classical, jazz, blues, folk, rock and pop music as well as being a venue for touring musical shows. In recent years it has also been increasingly used for conferences and exhibitions.

The Haymarket theatre in Leicester was one of the well known repertory theatres in the country. Closed at present, a new theatre is currently being built on Halford Street which is due to open in spring 2007. However, complications in the building programme look as if that opening date will now be postponed.

The Phoenix Arts Centre on Newarke Street is a small community venue providing a wide variety of entertainments. It is mainly used for showing films and hosting touring comedy and musical acts. However, it can also be used for theatrical plays and musical productions. There is, of course, a café/bar, which also hosts musical performances.

For live music, apart from at the De Montfort Hall, The Charlotte on Oxford Street is probably the biggest and best known. A fledgling Oasis played here many years ago! This is the venue in Leicester where you’ll first see the up and coming ‘Indie’ bands.

There are currently some 13 nightclubs to choose from in Leicester. Worth mentioning here is the Po Na Na, which apart from its interesting name, is well known for being the place to go for Funk and House music. Two floors with two separate sound systems make this a savvy and party spirited place to be. Po Na Na is in Carey Close near the Jewry Wall.

Leicester has three comedy clubs; Jongleurs (Granby Street), Ship of Fools (using a variety of stages including the Phoenix Arts Centre, and Bottle Rocket (at the Firebug bar).

As some of you may know…I am a big fan of board games.

I am happy to devote an entire weekend to the likes of Pictionary, Scrabble, and of course my personal favourite: Operation (You know there is something delightfully obscene about a game that revolves around trying to replace a little plastic spleen with a pair of tweezers into a bizarro man with a large red blinking nose. After a few wines you can take that barrel of fun to the bank…..in spades!)

However, there is one board game that, even with three bottles of my favourite plonk under the belt, you could not get me to play.

That game is Monopoly.

My aversion to this snotty and greedy little game probably dates back to my childhood, when my disdain for the millionaire in the top hat spawned, along with a morbid fear of clowns and raisin sandwiches.

                                

When I was eight, our neighbor’s children would come around on a Saturday afternoon with said game in hand and an evil Gordon-Geckoesque glint in their eyes wanting to know if we would like to play. My parents, eager to offload their offspring for a few hours of peace and a few glasses of Chateau-De -Headache, would promptly agree on behalf of my sister and myself that “there would be nothing we would love to particpate in more”.

Begrudgingly, we would sit on the floor, have our multi-coloured bills doled out to us, set up a little Scottish Terrier or a Vroom-Vroom car and wait for the inevitable.

The game would always start out in a reasonable fashion. You would roll the dice, land on a coloured square and then buy it, hoping to collect a set of properties and start reaping the rewards from your fellow players’ misfortune when they would make pit or toilet stops on one of them.

My sister and I are not stupid, and quite often we would kick start a match with very promising results…a Trafalgar Square here… a Park Lane there … all very much in the spirit of good, juvenile fun.

However, about twenty minutes into the venture we would notice that our neighbors suddenly had at least DOUBLE the cash and more lego-like houses than even Coomera Realty could develop in such a short time.

When accused of dodgy dealings, our neighbors would suddenly claim “Off-shore Swiss bank accounts” and “Legitimate Tax refunds” to explain their rapid accumulation of wealth;  and, when we argued that landing on “Free Parking” did NOT entitle the player to all of OUR money, the reponse would be “Don’t you KNOW what the rules of the Parker Brothers 1979 edition are?”

                                     

Even when either my sister or myself overcame such questionable regulations and still looked very favourable to cross the finish line, we would always be hit with the “She Who Smelt It Dealt It” Tax when landing on “GO”.

The end result was usually ugly, with little, green plastic houses being shoved into various orifices and an almighty indignant holler to “MUMMMMMMM!!!!!!!”

So, you could say that I get very angry and resentlful when I think about those games of Monopoly, or any other competition, where one party, upon realising that he or she is losing, decides to change the rules to serve his or her position.

Thus, it comes as no surprise that I was more than a little peeved when, this morning, I watched a re-run on the news showing  the Democratic National Committee hand down its decision on the unseated delegates from Florida and Michigan as part of the US Electoral Primary process.

For those of you who follow American politics, you would know that, at the end of last year,  both Florida and Michigan were banned from having their Democratic Party delegates seated at the convention coming up in August. This was due to each of those states’ decisions to go against the Democratic Party’s rules by moving their states’ primaries to earlier dates than when they had been directed to conduct them.

As a result, the powers that be at the highest echelon of the Democratic Party punished both states by declaring that their delegates would not be counted in the process of electing a nominee for the general election in November.

At the time of this decision, Hillary Clinton remained silent. Tacit then, in her agreement with these findings. In fact, in the latter part of 2007, she was quoted as saying that the findings were “fair”.

When the numbers and polls started to look decidely shifty for the Senator from New York, a murmur from the Clinton camp began to circulate about how potentially unreasonable this decision was.

This murmur grew to a grumble, which grew to a whinge, which now has blown out to an almighty “MUUMMMMMMMY” howl of indignation from Clinton and her supporters, now that the nominee for the Democratic party, if the numbers are correct, can only be Barack Obama, given any current scenario.

                   

 After much deliberation, the committee ended up awarding the majority of Florida delegates to Clinton and divided up half of Michigan between the two remaining candidates (again, favouring Clinton by 10 delegates I might add) even though Obama went along with the original party decision to not campaign or put his name on the ballot in this state.

And yet……

….the screams, foot-stamping and hissy-fits from Clinton supporters that followed the decision, could probably have been heard from Washington all the way down to those who reside on their porches in the Appalachians (whom apparently have heard the call and are on their way down to protest  as well…those nice, fair-minded, white working folk from West Virginia)

There was strong talk from Clinton’s camp about appealing this decision and taking this argument/all the way to the Democratic convention.

Does this not remind anyone of a certain horrific incident…umm…let’s say 8 years ago?????

In short, it is a divisive and desperate call from a wing of the party that is critically wounded, and will take “whatever means necessary” to try and shift the goal posts in order to favour their candidate.

           

The USA has had eight years of disasterous governing with the Bush Administration. The election in 2008 is there for the Democrats to “lose” at this point.  If this issue with Florida and Michigan is taken beyond today, it can only weaken the result for the party in November.

And for what?

An overwhelming, bitter sense of “entitlement” is my guess.

Those of you who know me, know that I have been a Barack Obama fan since….well, since first saw him speak in Chicago back in 2003.

However, this is not a Pro-Obama/Anti-Clinton rant. It is an observation that what seems to transparantly obvious to me, is not shared by others.

This is a blog about playing fair.

You play the game, according to the rules.

If you are losing the game, it is not then reasonable to change those rules because you are pissed off that someone landed on Mayfair before you did, or that you just don’t like the look of the little silver dog.

At any rate, the way things are going, the only board game that Hillary and Obama might be playing over the next seven days will be “Battleship”.

The ambitious program of architectural improvements to Vienna introduced by Emperor Franz Joseph I, including the Ringstraße, the Rathauspark (City Hall Park), and the Opera. Friedrich von Schmidt, who had been one of the architects working on Cologne Cathedral, designed and built the Vienna City Hall between 1872 and 1883. It is the most significant secular building in the neo-Gothic style in the city.

As Vienna is Austria’s federal capital as well as a federal province in its own right, it is the seat of the mayor and governor of Vienna – two posts held by the same person. The Provincial Assembly is composed of 100 members and elected for a term of five years.

The huge chandelier in the historicist style is the most striking feature of the 14-metre-high Council Chamber where the members of the Assembly convene. It has a diameter of five meters and 213 lights. It was cast in one piece, weighs 3,200 kg and can be entered by maintenance personnel to change the lamps. The coffered ceiling of high-grade larch and spruce wood is decorated with 22-carat gold-leaf rosettes. Directly below the ceiling, a series of frescoes depicts events from the history of Austria and Vienna. The section situated on the right hand of the central visitors’ gallery shows scenes from the 13th to 16th centuries; one can see Duke Rudolf IV laying the foundation-stone for the southern spire of St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the institution of Vienna University, the world’s oldest university where students are taught in the German language.

The left-hand side takes one into the 17th to 19th centuries. Empress Maria Theresa is surrounded by famous exponents of the politics, arts and sciences of her era. Most of the pointed-arch windows with stained lead glazing facing the gallery were reconstructed after the Second World War on the basis of the original plans. The back wall of the central visitors’ gallery depicts the tasks of Vienna’s municipal administration in symbolic form.

Another attractive feature is the Senate Chamber which serves as the meeting-room of the City Senate. This is one of the most impressive rooms of the City Hall. A special sight is the beautiful majolica fireplace – a present by the Guild of Stove and Fireplace Makers dating from 1885 – on the wall facing the entrance to the hall. The walls are covered with green silk damask. The ceiling featuring inlay work and gilt elements is intricately and richly decorated.

The Arkadenhof is one of the biggest inner courtyards in Europe having a surface of 2,804 square meters, and can be compared to the courtyard of the Doge’s Palace in Venice. A choir-type oriel along its western wall is a reminder of the original project to build a chapel in the City Hall. Lined by five-meter-wide, pointed-arch arcades, the courtyard offers a fascinating setting for a wide variety of events. A folding roof designed by the architect Silja Tillner is a new addition to protect visitors against wind and rain. It also houses the Municipal and State Libraries and Archives which hold many key documents of Vienna’s history and a large collection of local memorabilia.
